EMPTY NOUN PHRASE & ANAPHORS

EMPTY NOUN PHRASE AND ANAPHORS
Written by WAWAN ANWAR MUSADAT
NPM : 2009 1250 1157

Phrase kata benda (NP) yang tersembunyi dan kata di depan kata penggantinya (ANTECEDENT).
Fungsi dari posisi kosong, ditunjukan sebagai [e]’ dalam kalimat berikut ini:
The director of prisons promised Peter [e] to visit the prison
The director of prison persuade Peter to visit the prison.

Sally said she was leaving early

Its unusual [e] to see snow at this time of year
[e] to see snow at this time of year is unusual
Kita dapat memindahkan [e] di conoth tersebut dengan anyone tanpa mengubah proposional content kalimat. Tapi kita akan memerlukan komplemen for:
It’s unusual for anyone to see snow at this time of year.
For anyone to see snow at this time of year is unusual
Lebih jauh lagi, empty noun phrase dapat juga mengacu kepada si pembicara atau yang lainnya di dalam situasi pembicaraan., banyak sebagai pronominal I. you, we, me dan pronominal orang pertama dan kedua yang lainnya.melakuakan:
It’s sad [e] to see them leave so early.

The cats washed themselves delicately
*The cats thought that Josephine washed themselves delicately
A play that Marlowe wrote about Shakespeare’s treatment of himself.

Disini antecedent yang hanya mungkin untuk mengikat himself adalah Shakespeare’s, yang didalam domain lokal NP yang sama; himself tidak dapat mengacu pada Marlowe. Pikiran local domain demikian valid untuk anaphor juga.
Kita formulasikan penyebaran berikut: sebuah anaphor harus mnegikat dalam local domain itu; sebuah pronominal haus bebas di dalam local domain nya.

TYPES OF NOUN (COUNT & NON COUNT)

EXPLANATION
TYPES OF NOUN

In English, as in many other languages, nouns are divided into two categories, known as "count nouns" and "non-count nouns".  These are sometimes called "countable nouns" and "uncountable nouns".

Count Nouns
Count nouns are nouns that refer to things that can be multiplied or counted, for example: one man, two women, three children, four cars, five shirts, six computers, seven sisters, and so on.

Non-Count Nouns
Non-count nouns are nouns that refer to generalisations, concepts or substances, things that cannot be put in the plural for example. water, oxygen, eternity, psychology, anger, politics, heat, alcohol.... and so on.

Count-Nouncount Distinction
Count nouns refer to entities viewed in English as individual units. The entities they refer to can be abstract (an idea, suggestion, belief, prejudice) as well as concrete ( a house, potato, finger, etc) when a count noun is singular and indefinite, the article “a/an” is often used with it. (The real meaning of “a” is “one”.)
The question from beginning how many…? Is used to ask about quantity for count noun only.
e.g,: how many students are coming today?

Non-count typically refers to entities that are viewed not as individual units but as something having no specific shape or boundry. when they are indefinite, we either use the word “some” or nothing at all instead of an article.
e.g., “Could I have some water please?”
“I'd like rice with my steak.”
Non counts noun are used to designated abstract or very generalized referents such as starvation, gravity, pollution, happiness, humanity, etc. they are also used for concrete things viewed as mass or bulk rather than as countable units, for example, butter, water, rice, furniture, etc. The question form how much…? Is used to ask about quantity for non count nouns
e.g,. How much money do you have?
Proper nouns are nouns that refer to specific entities. Writers of English capitalize proper nouns like Nebraska, Steve, Harvard, or White House to show their distinction from common nouns. Common nouns refer to general, unspecific categories of entities. Whereas Nebraska is a proper noun because it signifies a specific state, the word state itself is a common noun because it can refer to any of the 50 states in the United States. Harvard refers to a particular institution of higher learning, while the common noun university can refer to any such institution.
determiners with count and non count nouns
singular counts noun require either the indefinite article a/an or definite determiner like the, this, or that. For plural nouns, the only indefinite article allowed is the zero form, for example, houses rather than *a house. Some quantifiers, like each and every, can occur with singular count nouns,, while other quantifier, such as several, both, and few, occur with plural count nouns: each house every house few houses both houses several houses
The Indefinite Article
Singular indefinite noun phrase have several basic uses :
The specific indefinite use indicates a specific entity that is not yet familiar to addressee and not uniquely identified by the noun phrase
A beautiful girl cry
the Generic indefinite use refers not to anyone or anything specific but to a class of entities
they advertised for a three-bedroom apartment
the generic predicate noun phrase use provides a classification; this is a really a special case of the generic indefinite use
Toronto is a beautiful city

The interpretation of a noun phrase as specific or generic depends heavily on the predicate it occurs with the time reference of the clause, and the broader context.
In this example : the old lady have a baby boy
It should be clear that the reference is to a specific baby boy. However, in the next example, in which the verb are hope rather than have, the reference less clear, in the absence o other information, we might interpret the object noun phrase as generic:
The old lady are hoping for a baby boy.
The ambiguity disappears when the noun phrase is replaced by a pronoun. The pronoun it would be used for a baby boy noun phrase or specific baby. While one would be the choice if the reference was generic.
Essentially, the same uses can be listed for plural indefinite noun phrase the difference uses seem to blur at the boundaries:
The specific indefinite use indicates specific entities that are not yet in the mind of the addressee. In this use, plural noun, have either the zero indefinite article or the determiner some (often pronounced with a very weak stress (sm), but if some as quantifier never pronounced with weak stress and have meaning as contrast to all.
the generic indefinite use to refers to a class entities:
0 bicycles can be very expensive
Note : that some in generic noun phrase is used solely as quantifier; it refers to part of the class.
Some cars (i.e., not all) can be very expensive
the generic predicate noun phrase used indicates as classifying predicate. This again as a special case of the generic indefinite use
Tom and Pell were 0 deerhounds

The Definite Article
The definite article the can occur almost any kind of noun –count or non count, singular or plural- except for noncount proper nouns. In general, the definite article is used when its noun phrase refers to an entity that should be identifiable.
The entity may be considered identifiable for any several reasons:
1. it has previously been identified to the addressee
2. there’s only one such entity or event, at lest in our everyday experience
e..g., the sun, the Olympic games, the USA, etc.
3. within a particular context, the entity is something we assume exi
e.g : in the context of family, the father, the mother, the daughter, etc.
4. in context of human body: the hand, the feet, the eye, etc.
the entities has been referred to previously. A tall woman enterd the room.
May be followed by statements oscar noticed that the women looked angry.
6. the entity represented as unque in some context by modifiers like the
superlatives the strongest, the most beautiful. Or by other words
designating uniqueness, such as only and sole. The only reporter and the
sole representatives
7. the entity is present at the time of the utterance or within reasonable time
before the utterance. The brown jacket, or the boy over there.

G. Some problems For noun Classification

Some noncount noun are always plural, except for a few specialized usages. The noun scissors, shears, trousers, pyjamas, jeans, knickers require a pair of, two pairs of.
On the other hand, nouns like police, people, cattle and vermin are used for plural noun.
The police are coming immediately
The police is coming immmeduately (wrong)
One last significant problem for classification concern collective noun, which refer to groups of individuals. In American English, when the singular nouns like administration, public, crowd, are used as subject, presents tense verb are almost inevitably in their singular form. (see subject-verb agreement)

In linguistics, anaphora (pronounced /əˈnæfərə/) is an instance of an expression referring to another.

In general, an anaphoric expression is represented by a pro-form or some kind of deictic.

In some theories, the strict definition of anaphora includes only references to preceding utterances. A preceding utterance can be anything, such as a noun (see examples below). Under this definition, forward references (where the cataphoric expression refers to a succeeding utterance) are instead named cataphora, and both effects together are endophora. Also, the term exophora names situations where the referent does not appear in the utterances of the speaker, but instead in the real world. Some linguists prefer to define anaphora generically to include all of these referential effects.Contents

Anaphoric reference

Generally "anaphora" refers to the way in which a word or phrase relates to other text. These further terms are also seen:
An exophoric reference refers to language outside of the text in which the reference is found.
A homophoric reference is a generic phrase that obtains a specific meaning through knowledge of its context. For example, the meaning of the phrase "the Queen" may be determined by the country in which it is spoken. Because there are many Queens throughout the world, the location of the speaker provides the extra information that allows an individual Queen to be identified.
An endophoric reference refers to something inside of the text in which the reference is found.
An anaphoric reference, when opposed to cataphora, refers to something within a text that has been previously identified. For example, in "Susan dropped the plate. It shattered loudly" the word "it" refers to the phrase "the plate".
A cataphoric reference refers to something within a text that has not yet been identified. For example, in "Because he was very cold, David promptly put on his coat" the identity of the "he" is unknown until the individual is also referred to as "David".
[edit]
Examples
The monkey took the banana and ate it. "It" is anaphoric under the strict definition (it refers to the banana).
Pam went home because she felt sick. "She" is anaphoric (it refers to Pam).
What is this? "This" can be considered exophoric (it refers to some object or situation near the speaker).
The dog ate the bird and it died. "It" is anaphoric and ambiguous (did the dog or bird die?).
[edit]
Anaphora in generative grammar

In generative grammar, the term anaphor is used to refer to English's reflexive and reciprocal pronouns, and analogous forms in other languages. Anaphors in this sense must have strictly local antecedents, because they receive their reference via the local syntactic operation (or rule of interpretation) known as binding.

Reflexive anaphors must obey binding condition A, which states that "a reflexive pronoun must be bound within the smallest category containing it, its selecting head and a subject (=its governing category, or GC)".[1] In the following sentence: *John thought that she saw himself, the GC of the reflexive 'himself' is the relative clause, since it contains the anaphor itself, its selecting head (saw) and a subject (she). The only available noun that could bind 'himself' is 'she', but this is ruled out because of the gender mismatch. The anaphor is therefore left unbound, which violates condition A - explaining the sentence's ungrammaticality.
[edit]
Anaphor resolution

This means finding what the anaphor is referring to. Statistical methods based on tokens’ frequency are commonly used, though with compromises.

It is often difficult when sentences are taken out of context.
The Prime Minister of New Zealand visited us yesterday. The visit was the first time she had come to New York since 1998.

If the second sentence is quoted by itself, it is necessary to resolve the anaphor:
The visit was the first time the Prime Minister of New Zealand had come to New York since 1998.

Although of course, as The Prime Minister of New Zealand is an office of state and she would seem to refer to the person currently occupying that office, it could quite easily be that the Prime Minister of New Zealand had visited New York since 1998 and before the present day, whilst the present incumbent she had not.

However, even when taken in context, anaphor resolution can become increasingly complex. Consider the three examples:
We gave the bananas to the monkeys because they were hungry.
We gave the bananas to the monkeys because they were ripe.
We gave the bananas to the monkeys because they were here.

In the first sentence, "they" refers to "monkeys", whereas in the second sentence, "they" refers to "bananas". A semantic understanding that monkeys get hungry, while bananas become ripe is necessary when resolving this ambiguity. Since this type of understanding is still poorly implemented in software, automated anaphora resolution is currently an area of active research within the realm of natural language processing. The third sentence isn't easily resolved either way.
[edit]
Complement anaphora

In some special cases, an anaphora may refer not to its usual antecedent, but to its complement set. This phenomenon was first extensively studied in a series of psycholinguistic experiments,[2][3] in the early 1990s.

In (1), the anaphoric pronoun 'they' refers to the children who are eating the ice-cream. Contrastingly, in (2), 'they' seems to refer to the children who are not eating ice-cream.
(1) Only a few of the children ate their ice-cream. They ate the strawberry flavour first.
(2) Only a few of the children ate their ice-cream. They threw it around the room instead.

The fact that sentences like (2) exist in the language seems at first odd: by definition, an anaphoric pronoun must refer to some noun that has already been introduced into the discourse. In complement anaphora cases, since the referent of the pronoun hasn't been formerly introduced, it is difficult to explain how something can refer to it. In the first sentence of (2), the set of ice-cream-eating-children is introduced into the discourse; but then the pronoun 'they' refers to the set of non-ice-cream-eating-children, a set which hasn't been priorly mentioned. One resolution of this problem is that 'they' refers to all the children, but the second sentence semantically excludes the children who ate ice cream, since children who ate their ice cream cannot throw it around the room.

Several accounts of this phenomenon are found in the literature, based on both semantic and pragmatic considerations. The most important point of debate is the question, whether the pronoun in (2) refers to the complement set (i.e. only to the set of non-ice-cream-eating-children), or to the maximal set (i.e. to all the children, while discounting the minority group).[4][5][6] The answer to this question may have theoretical consequences regarding the question of the kind of information that the brain is able to access or calculate, and also pragmatical consequences regarding the way a theory of anaphora resolution should be devised.
